President-elect Donald Trump selected News anchor and Army veteran Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense on Tuesday.
Who is Pete Hegseth ?
Hegseth would assume the top position amid a series of international problems if the Senate ratified him. According to the Associated Press, Hegseth must address important issues as a prospective secretary of defense, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the ongoing Middle East attacks, efforts to promote a ceasefire between Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas, and growing concerns about the developing alliance between North Korea and Russia.
A glance at Pete Hegseth’s views on the main US security challenges, such as the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the threat posed by China, and his outlook on the Middle East.
China
During an interview with Shawn Ryan on the Shawn Ryan Show, Hegseth, 44, stated that “China is building an army to defeat the United States of America,” in reference to the continuing worldwide issues, especially China.
Iran
Hegseth called on Trump to strike Iran’s economic bases and cultural institutions if they were discovered to be hiding weapons during an interview with Fox in 2020, when Iran was shooting ballistic missiles at US positions in Iraq.
He claimed that international and US laws against war crimes are “rigged” against American military prowess. Hegseth went on to say that the US should “rewrite the rules” of war to gain an advantage.
Ukraine
“The situation in Ukraine is significant. However, it is insignificant compared to the criminality I witness on my streets, the wokeness I observe in my culture, the inflation I observe in my wallet, and the actual border I care about—the open southern border. In reference to the conflict in Ukraine, Hegseth stated on Fox News’ The Faulkner Focus that “the quality of life of average Americans has gone down on every single issue.”
Russia
On Jesse Watters Primetime in 2022, the Fox News anchor attacked the American media for disseminating Russian propaganda, accusing Trump of media trolling when he called the Russian president’s army maneuvers “savvy” and “genius.”
“Our media, the American media, holds Vladimir Putin in high regard. No, our own media has done more than any other organization or entity to promote Russian propaganda and support Vladimir Putin, the strongman. And because they can’t help it and will become fixated on it, Donald Trump was delighted to taunt them about it, as he still does today,” Hegseth continued.
