My Story, Lindsey Graham’s recently released self-published memoir, provides an insight into his colorful history, which includes his “rascally” upbringing in a South Carolina bar, multiple unsuccessful romantic relationships, and the beginnings of the highly disparaging moniker “Stinkball.”
In his book, which was made available for free download on his website on Wednesday, the Republican presidential contender and longtime bachelor—who has made jokes about having a “rotating First Lady” if elected—discloses his experiences with marriage and explains why he never got married.
According to Politico, he had two girlfriends while serving in the German Air Force: a Lufthansa flight attendant named Sylvia and a JAG officer named Carol who later worked for Colin Powell. He also had a girlfriend, Debbie, while he was a law student.
Lindsey Graham’s upbringing
In his biography, Graham describes how his parents reared him in the back of the segregated bar they owned in the little South Carolina town of Central. He shared a restroom with customers who worked at a local mill factory and bathed in water heated on the stove.
When Graham was only 22, his father and mother passed away within 15 months of one another, leaving him devastated.
He didn’t find serenity until he was elected to Congress. He adds that he was confident that his parents were aware of my accomplishments and that he had surpassed our expectations because of them and everything they had done for him.
